16MP Micro four thirds DSLR Camera G5 From Panasonic was a
fantastic
Camera when it was announced back in 2012 with a price tag
of over 1000 dollars. The camera had a higher price tag as you would expect as
the camera had most of the latest extras that came with the pro version. GH3 .
Since then much has come along and the introduction of 4 k
onto prosumer / consumer cameras. Like the GH7. This review is on the GH5 and
how it has performed over the last 5 years and asks is it still a great
contender for making budget videos.
The G5 has no 4K potential and this is now reflected in the
price as the item can be purchased (as of writing this) new for around $200 -
£140. LINK HERE
The used prices stack up nicely though as they can be
purchased for around $150 - £100. These can sell on ebay or local classified.
The best place to purchase is from a used camera shop or Amazon as these will come
with some sort of warranty in case something may go wrong and you wish to
return the item for repair or a refund.
As you may already know from looking at the specs from
new that the camera is still a great contender for good quality 1080p video
at 50 or 60 frames per second depending on region where the
item was originally sold. (PAL 50 NTFS 60). This can produce good results from
standard IS Panasonic lenses. (More on these later)

Quality
The G5 does feel very nice in the hand and feels well made with the buttons feeling responsive and not at all plasticey. The camera is surrounded by plastic body and has rubber touch grips for a better hold of the device. it feels very secure in the hand even though it is very small compared to a normal sized DSLR.
Longevity
The particular item under review here has been my camera for over 4 years now and has performed outstandingly. The camera and censor has been kept clean along with the lenses and has been used in varying conditions and still performs as good as it did when purchased.
The lenses have started to loosen slightly when used and the the rings for manual focus do not feel as tight as they did. This said these lenses have been used in manual focus quite a lot and probably have more use than normal. As they are primarily auto focus lenses and the rings would be used far less for focusing. The Zoom ring is also slightly looser but still feels ok.
Battery times
Battery times vary dramatically as the make and age will determine there longevity. You should expect at least 2 hours from a good battery. If this is not the case it may be worth inverting in some new batteries. still available. HEREConnectivity
The camera is easily connected via usb to pc or mac and transfer of files is simple. It does not have WiFi capabilities but a WiFi card like The one listed Here Can be used.Availability and accessories
Most accessories are still available as are the lumix micro four thirds lenses. These lenses fit most of the Panasonic micro four thirds camera systems.Usage
This camera is smaller than most and can feel undersized if you are used to a normal sized DSLR. This can also be an advantage if you are carring it around for long periods and have to change lenses regularly. The greatest advantage to mico four thirds is the size of weight reduction of your kit bag. The buttons and custom menus are brilliant and this truly is a customization camera for your needs.Cost Now
